Integrated pest management is a five step strategy that focuses on long term prevention of pests. Using one or more techniques such as habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices and biological control. Pesticides will only be used after monitoring and assessing the best strategy to only remove the targeted organism. So what are the 5 steps we use?
Step #1 - Identify the pest
This is an important and sometimes over looked step. Identifying the insect will allow us to understand if it is a pest or contributing to the broader ecosystem. The goal being to eliminate unnecessary pest control efforts.
Step #2 - Monitor Activity
Putting effort in monitoring pest activity, we will be able to determine the level of potential damage. The best method to approach the issue and how to limit damage to the environment.
Step #3- Determine When to take Action
When the pest control issue becomes a threat to cause damage, we will determine the best plan to eradicate the issue, while keeping the environment in mind.
Step #4- Create Treatment options
Prevention is always our first priority and is considered first. Pesticides are not our only options and we will explore all preventative or exclusion plans first.
Step #5- Evaluate the Results
Pest management is an ongoing process. If pest populations are at a manageable level no further treatments will be necessary.
